Nvidia's RTX Spark Brings Windows 11 Gaming Performance to New Heights
The collaboration between Microsoft and Nvidia has finally yielded results with the launch of Windows 11 on Nvidia's RTX Spark, an Arm-based CPU paired with a desktop-class GPU. For eight months, engineers from both companies worked together to make this possible, rewriting five foundational subsystems inside Windows 11 to bridge the gap between low-power efficiency and top-tier gaming performance.
One of the major challenges was emulation, which has always been an Achilles' heel when it comes to running games on ARM chips. Microsoft's Principal Product Manager, Peter Dawoud, explained that average frame rates look acceptable but CPU timing can get erratic when emulating a game, causing micro-stuttering and frame pacing issues.
To address this, Microsoft overhauled the Prism emulation layer for RTX Spark's pipelines, shoring up how tasks are assigned to each of the CPU's threads. This resulted in much more stable frame rates, a significant improvement over past versions.
