NYC Cracks Down on Small Buildings Without Official Trash Bins
New York City is cracking down on small buildings that don't use official trash bins. Fines for repeat offenders range from $50 to $200.
The move affects around 750,000 buildings in the five boroughs with one to nine units. The bins are available for purchase at Home Depot for about $60 and have been mandatory since June.
The city aims to reduce the rat population by keeping trash off sidewalks and in containers. Organic waste should be set out separately in compost containers, while recycling goes into clear or blue plastic bags for collection.
Councilmember Frank Morano expressed opposition to the plan, saying he's seen people throwing away good garbage pails because they're not city-funded.
