NYC Enforces NYC Bin Use with Fines Starting Tuesday
The New York City Department of Sanitation is cracking down on improper trash disposal. Starting Tuesday, homeowners or owners of residences with nine or fewer units will need to use NYC Bins for their trash collection.
Those who fail to comply will face fines: $50 for the first offense, increasing to $100 for the second and $200 for subsequent offenses.
The official black NYC bins can be purchased in-store at Home Depot or ordered through various delivery services. Residents may continue using their existing bins if they are properly marked for compostable and recyclable materials, but clear plastic bags are allowed only for recyclables.
Homeowners of one- and two-family homes who received the School Tax Relief property tax exemption in 2024 or 2025 are eligible for reimbursement through Tuesday. To learn about the program, they can click on a link provided by the Department of Sanitation.
