NYC Mayor Backs Bill Targeting Amazon's Delivery Practices

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is backing a bill that would give the city more regulatory power over companies like Amazon, which frequently subcontract last-mile delivery to third-party facilities. The Delivery Protection Act aims to improve working conditions for delivery workers by requiring 'last mile' warehouse operators to obtain a business license through the city's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection.

The bill, sponsored by New York City Council Member Tiffany L. Cabán, would increase licensing requirements for companies that operate delivery-focused warehouse facilities, allowing the city to exert more control over fair work practices.

Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel stated that the legislation could jeopardize the company's ability to hire local workers, threatening the jobs of over 5,000 employees and forcing Amazon to consider relocating delivery operations outside of the city.
