NYC Mayor Cracks Down on Prohibited E-Bikes, Scooters Sold to City Residents
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has sent cease-and-desist letters to 40 major retailers, including Target and Amazon, for selling 'prohibited motorized scooters and e-bikes' in the city.
The move comes a week after a 17-year-old boy was fatally struck by an SUV while riding an e-bike in Lower Manhattan. Mamdani stated that the vehicles being sold by these retailers exceed legal speed limits, wattage limits, and VIN requirements.
The online retailers receiving cease-and-desist letters include Wayfair, Walmart, Temu, and more. The letters demand that the stores immediately end the sale of prohibited motorized scooters and e-bikes to New York City residents and businesses, with fines of up to $2,000 for each sale possible after August 18.
The Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn also weighed in, saying 'Let's be clear, these are motorcycles being marketed to New Yorkers as bicycles.'
