Obi's Transparency Challenge Sparks Debate Among Nigerian Politicians

Nigerian politician Peter Obi has sparked a debate about transparency in politics after publicly explaining how he built his wealth before entering office. According to an interview with TV host Oseni Rufai, Obi's business career began long before he entered politics and included running a brand and market management company as well as holding the franchise for Heinz products in Nigeria.

The former Anambra State governor also revealed that he served as the sole agent for South African Breweries and worked with pharmaceutical company Novartis, among other international companies. He added that the business he built later became associated with the Next Cash and Carry retail chain after he exited and his brother took over.

Obi's explanation came in response to allegations linked to the Pandora Papers and reported offshore assets attributed to him, including assets reportedly worth about $15m held offshore. He insisted that his wealth predated his political career and recalled his years in the United Kingdom, where he received one of the first American Express Platinum cards issued to a limited number of customers worldwide in 1987.

Nigerian musician Davido has since thrown a challenge at Nigerian politicians, stating bluntly: 'None of them can try it' when asked if they could similarly account for how they made their money. His comment has added a celebrity dimension to the debate and turned Rufai's question into a challenge to politicians to publicly account for their sources of wealth.
