Oil Prices Surge Amid Escalating Trade Tensions

US stocks fell on Tuesday, September 8, as Wall Street returned from the Labor Day holiday to a shortened trading week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 511 points, or 0.7%, while the S&P 500 declined 0.2%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.1%.

The rise in oil prices weighed on investor sentiment, with Brent crude futures reaching six-week highs of $99.22 a barrel and US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gaining 3.3% to $94.54. This surge has raised concerns over the inflation outlook and the Federal Reserve's interest-rate path.

Investors are now awaiting Friday's Consumer Price Index data for further clues on whether inflation is moving closer to the Fed's 2% target. Treasury yields have also moved higher amid concerns that elevated energy prices could fuel inflation, with the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield reaching its highest level since November 2023.

Trade tensions between the US and Canada escalated after Ottawa imposed tariffs of up to 50% on certain US goods, covering around $20 billion of US products. In contrast, chip stocks provided some support, with Nasdaq-100 futures rising 0.2% in premarket trading and the iShares Semiconductor ETF gaining 1.7%. Nvidia rose 0.7%, Broadcom advanced 1.1%, and Intel jumped 4.7%.
