OpenAI Agrees to $3.2M Settlement Over Visa Discrimination Claims
OpenAI has agreed to pay $3.2 million to settle claims it discriminated against U.S. workers in its hiring practices, favoring foreign workers with temporary employment visas instead.
The Justice Department alleged that OpenAI and its subsidiary Statsig took steps to discourage American job seekers from applying for certain positions, including requiring paper applications rather than electronic ones, advertising jobs on radio during late-night hours, and failing to post openings on external websites.
The settlement marks the latest in a series of similar cases involving technology companies, with at least a dozen settlements announced by the Justice Department since last year.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said that the substantial settlement amount ensures OpenAI redresses harm and changes its recruitment practices to give U.S. workers a fair opportunity for highly sought-after technology positions.
