OpenAI Sued by Newspapers Over Alleged Copyright Infringement on AI Training Data

Seattle-based news outlet The Seattle Times and Long Island's Newsday have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging copyright infringement. The company allegedly used their journalism as training data for its AI models without permission.

The lawsuit claims that OpenAI often reproduces passages from the reporting of both outlets in response to user queries. This is similar to previous lawsuits filed by other news organizations such as The New York Times, Ziff Davis, Merriam-Webster, and Encyclopedia Britannica against OpenAI.

Microsoft has also been named as a defendant since its Copilot is built on OpenAI's technology. The publishers are seeking the destruction of any copies of their works that OpenAI and Microsoft hold, along with training datasets and AI models that incorporate them.
