Opera Loses Court Challenge to Exempt Microsoft's Edge from EU Rules

Norwegian browser maker Opera has lost its court challenge against EU antitrust regulators' decision to exempt Microsoft's Edge from rules under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

The European Commission said in its 2024 decision that Edge was not an important gateway for businesses to reach users, despite meeting the quantitative criteria set out under the DMA.

Opera argued that the Commission had misapplied the criteria, but the Luxembourg-based General Court sided with the EU antitrust watchdog.

The court ruling raises the bar for legal challenges against the EU's DMA decisions. The case is T-357/24 Opera Norway v Commission.
