Procter & Gamble (P&G) is expanding its health and wellness portfolio by acquiring Thorne, a supplements brand from private equity firm L Catterton. The $3.8 billion cash deal will add a fast-growing supplements brand to P&G's stable of consumer health businesses.

The acquisition comes as the consumer goods giant seeks to capture growing consumer demand for premium nutrition products. Founded in 1984, Thorne sells products including magnesium and omega-3 supplements through direct-to-consumer channels, healthcare practitioners, and retail partners. Its customer base is skewed towards consumers under 40.

P&G's chief executive of health care, Paul Gama, said that consumer interest in self-care and prevention continues to grow. Thorne, he added, strengthens P&G's position in premium wellness with a trusted science-backed brand that complements its existing portfolio.
