P&G Dives into Supplements Market with $3.8B Thorne Acquisition
Procter & Gamble (P&G) has acquired Thorne, a supplements maker, for $3.8 billion in cash from L Catterton, a private equity firm backed by LVMH. The takeover is part of P&G's push into the health and wellness market to capitalize on growing demand for self-care products.
The acquisition marks a major move by P&G into the vitamins, minerals, and supplements (VMS) sector, where multinational consumer goods giants are competing for space. P&G has forecast slower annual sales growth, but its beauty and wellness division posted strong results last week.
P&G's rivals, including Unilever and Nestle, have also made moves into the VMS market. Unilever acquired a US-based nutritional supplements brand in April, while Nestle is reviewing its low-growth VMS brands.
