Passport Scammers Lure Victims with Fake Websites and Chatbots
A recent encounter with online scammers has left a Canberra resident on high alert after she fell victim to a fake passport application website. Charlotte, who wishes to remain anonymous due to fears that her information may have been leaked online, attempted to renew her British passport but was caught off-guard by the lack of customer support on the UK Passport Office site.
When searching for help, Charlotte turned to Google search results and came across a scam website that mimicked the official government platform. The site had a helpful chatbot that answered her questions instantly and she proceeded with her application, uploading sensitive documents to the portal.
However, after realizing that the website was not legitimate, Charlotte decided not to proceed with the passport application. She has since become 'seriously averse' to using the internet and suspects that a recent failed attempt to hack her myGov account may be connected to the scammers.
