Perplexity Wins Appeal, Keeps AI Shopping Tool on Amazon
Amazon's fight with Perplexity over online shopping has taken a major turn. In November 2025, Amazon sent Perplexity a cease-and-desist letter demanding that it block its AI browser from accessing Amazon's online store.
The dispute centers around the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), which prohibits intentionally accessing a computer without authorization and causing a loss of at least $5,000 in value over any one-year period.
The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has overturned an injunction that banned Perplexity's AI shopping tool from accessing Amazon. The court determined that Perplexity did not violate the CFAA, as it was the Comet user who accessed Amazon's servers with user direction.
Amazon expressed its disagreement with the decision and stated that it remains confident in its case, which will continue to play out in the San Francisco federal court.
