Personalized Cancer Vaccine Shows Promising Results in Clinical Trials
Pharmaceutical giants Merck and Moderna have announced positive clinical trial results for a personalized cancer vaccine. The vaccine, called V940, significantly reduces the risk of skin cancer returning and spreading.
The breakthrough is a result of decades-long research into harnessing the body's immune system to fight cancer. In the case of melanoma, researchers sequence the DNA in a patient's tumor to identify mutations unique to the cancer. This information is then used to create a personalized mRNA vaccine that trains the patient's immune system to recognize and attack cells carrying these mutations.
The Phase 2 trial found that patients who received the vaccine alongside a Merck immunotherapy drug were 49% less likely to have their cancer return or die, and 59% less likely to have their cancer spread or die. A Phase 3 trial involving 1,137 patients also showed positive results, with the vaccine achieving its main goal of improving recurrence-free survival.
However, the vaccine has limitations, including its inability to treat incurable cancer that has metastasized and challenges in predicting which tumor mutations a patient's immune system will recognize. The personalized nature of the vaccine also presents a challenge in terms of cost and scalability.
