A personalized skin cancer vaccine has shown promise in reducing the risk of recurrence for patients with melanoma. French oncologist Suzette Delaloge described it as a 'real hope' after preliminary trial results from pharmaceutical companies Moderna and Merck were announced.

The treatment, which combines a personalized vaccine with standard immunotherapy, was tested on over 1,100 patients. One group received the vaccine alongside immunotherapy, while another received only immunotherapy.

Preliminary data showed that the combination significantly reduced the risk of recurrence, with an approximate 50% reduction in the risk of recurrence seen in patients with five years of follow-up.

The vaccine is tailored to each patient based on the genetic characteristics of their tumor. It uses messenger RNA technology and can target up to 34 tumor-specific antigens. The aim is to train the immune system to recognize these proteins and destroy cancer cells carrying them if they reappear.
