PGA of America Overhauls Ryder Cup Qualifying System for 2027
The PGA of America has announced a major overhaul of its Ryder Cup qualifying system for the 2027 tournament. The new system eliminates the previous year's results and moves away from a points structure tied to prize money.
Qualifying will now span 31 events, starting in January 2027 with The American Express tournament and concluding after the BMW Championship in August. This change aims to give more weight to recent performances rather than past achievements.
The new formula assigns fixed point values based on each tournament's strength, rather than prize money earned. Major championship winners will receive 3,000 points, followed by 2,850 for the Players Championship. Winners of PGA Tour Signature events and the first two FedEx Cup playoff tournaments will earn 2,250, while champions at standard full-field Tour events receive 1,500.
The top six eligible Americans following the BMW Championship will qualify automatically, with captain Jim Furyk filling the remaining six spots on the roster through captain's selections. The changes are an attempt to improve the team's chances of winning on European soil for the first time since 1993.
