PhonePe and Visa Roll Out Contactless Payment Features for Overseas Travelers
PhonePe and Visa have introduced three new payment features that enable contactless transactions and overseas QR payments.
The first feature, 'Tap to Pay with Visa cards', allows PhonePe users with eligible Visa cards to tokenise their cards on the app and make contactless payments at compatible POS terminals. This feature will begin rolling out from September 9.
The service builds on existing Visa card tokenisation available on PhonePe, which replaces sensitive physical card details with a digital token to reduce sharing or storing of actual card numbers during transactions.
PhonePe is also introducing cross-border QR payments through Visa-supported QR codes. This feature will enable Indian users to scan eligible QR codes while traveling across 14 international markets, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Japan, China, and South Korea.
The third feature, 'Smart Accept', is aimed at small merchants without separate card POS terminals. Compatible smartphones can be used to accept contactless card payments through a physical tap or tokenised mobile wallet against the merchant's smartphone.
