Pilots Remain Vigilant About Wake Turbulence Behind Boeing 757s

An incident at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport has highlighted the ongoing concern about wake turbulence behind Boeing 757s. On September 13, an American Airlines Airbus A319 crew requested additional time before taking off from Runway 27R due to concerns about the preceding Delta Air Lines Boeing 757's wake.

The tower subsequently cancelled the clearance and instructed the American aircraft to vacate the runway. However, a heated exchange ensued between the pilot and air traffic control when the captain questioned whether the spacing was appropriate for calm-wind conditions.

The incident shows that pilots remain vigilant about the potential dangers of wake turbulence behind 757s. The FAA warns that encounters can range from light turbulence to a total loss of control or even an in-flight breakup, and has specifically highlighted concerns with this aircraft type since the early 1990s.
