Port Authority Marks 9/11 Anniversary with Ongoing Redevelopment Efforts
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is paying tribute to its employees who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks, marking the 25th anniversary of the tragedy. Executive Director Kathryn Garcia honored the 84 employees, including 34 police officers, by visiting the memorial's reflecting pools.
Garcia noted that the sound of water moving through the pools serves as a grounding reminder of the lives lost. The Port Authority has been working on rebuilding the World Trade Center campus for decades and has reshaped the 16-acre site with over 12 million square feet of office and cultural space, expanded public greenery, and the Oculus transit hub.
The agency's redevelopment efforts continue, with construction underway on Two World Trade Center, a 55-story building that will serve as the new global headquarters for American Express. The company plans to bring around 10,000 workers to the tower, which features 50,000 square feet of elevated green terraces along Greenwich Street.
