Poseidon and Triton Aircraft Team Up in Groundbreaking Demonstration
A recent laboratory demonstration by Boeing and Northrop Grumman has shown that P-8A Poseidon crews can task MQ-4C Triton surveillance drones directly during missions. The test, which took place on August 5, used the Universal Command and Control Interface (UCI) standard to enable rapid and scalable collaboration between the two aircraft.
The demonstration involved a simulated Triton receiving machine-readable mission orders from a P-8A operator via the UCI interface. The Triton then autonomously planned a transit to the assigned area, collected intelligence with its onboard sensors, processed the findings using AI algorithms, and sent the results back to the Poseidon.
Data was transmitted over satellite relay to mirror operational communications, Boeing said. The test did not involve any aircraft flying during the demonstration.
Tory Peterson, vice president of Boeing's P-8 program, described the teaming as a 'Poseidon-Triton' partnership that unlocks real-world capability and interoperability for the US and its allies. Jane Bishop, who leads Northrop Grumman's global surveillance division, referred to the two aircraft as 'the backbone of the US Navy's maritime patrol and reconnaissance force.'
