Luigi Mangione, 28, shocked friends and family with his involvement in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on December 4, 2024. Mangione initially denied the charges but later pleaded guilty to two counts of interstate stalking resulting in death.

In a statement to the court, Mangione claimed he killed Thompson due to his experience with the healthcare system and severe back pain from a broken back. He researched Thompson's schedule and found that the executive would be attending a meeting in New York City, where he shot and killed him.

Mangione comes from a prominent family in Maryland, known for their business ventures including country clubs, nursing homes, and a radio station. His lawyers are seeking to have most of the state charges against him dismissed following his guilty plea in the federal case.
