Pune Soft Drink Brand Beats Cola Giants to Local Loyalty
Founded in 1884 by Ardeshir, a Pune-based soft drink brand has been operating for over 142 years. The company started as a practical response to local demand for soda supplies, which were linked to Bombay at the time. This made transportation and availability a challenge, but Ardeshir saw an opportunity to produce soda locally in the Camp area.
The brand's initial success was built around soda water, but over the decades, the family expanded its range of flavors, with raspberry becoming one of its signature drinks. Other flavors like lemon, orange, ginger, jal jeera, cola, and ice-cream soda were also introduced. Traditionally, Ardeshir's drinks have been sold in glass bottles and closely associated with Pune's Camp neighborhood and the city's Parsi food culture.
The reason why Coca-Cola became famous while Ardeshir's stayed local has more to do with scale than who arrived first. Ardeshir's remained a small, family-owned operation focused on its home market, relying on local loyalty rather than nationwide distribution. In contrast, Coca-Cola followed a radically different path, with a business model that included bottling networks, advertising, and distribution strategies allowing it to expand internationally.
