Qantas Accelerates Retirement of A380 Superjumbo Fleet by Four Years
Qantas has accelerated its plan to retire its fleet of Airbus A380 superjumbos, bringing forward the timeline by four years. The airline originally planned to start retiring its ten A380s in 2032 but now expects them to leave the fleet from 2028.
The decision comes as Qantas gains confidence in delivery schedules for its new aircraft, including Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 787 Dreamliners. This confidence is partly due to talks with Airbus and Boeing regarding the purchase of up to 20 additional widebody planes, which could be delivered from 2030 onwards.
The airline has also announced that its first Project Sunrise A350-1000ULR, named Vega, is scheduled for delivery in April 2027. Qantas has a total of 24 A350s on order, including 12 standard long-range variants and 12 Project Sunrise ULRs.
