Qantas Flight Diverts to Melbourne After Mechanical Issue Forces Return from Santiago
A Qantas Boeing 787 flight from Sydney to Santiago was forced to divert to Melbourne due to a mechanical issue, stranding nearly 200 passengers.
The aircraft, registered as VH-ZNI, departed from Sydney Airport (SYD) on its scheduled service to Santiago International Airport (SCL), but about four and a half hours into the flight, the crew identified a mechanical problem that required them to return to Australia.
Because Sydney Airport was closed due to its overnight curfew, the aircraft landed at Melbourne Airport (MEL) instead. Passengers were accommodated overnight in hotels arranged by Qantas before continuing their journey on a replacement flight.
The airline coordinated with engineers to inspect the original aircraft and determine the cause of the mechanical issue. A replacement Boeing 787 Dreamliner, registered as VH-ZNA, was used to transport passengers from Melbourne to Santiago, minimizing the overall delay.
