Qantas Quietly Expands Pacific Hub in Auckland Amid Cost Considerations
Qantas has been quietly expanding its Pacific hub in Auckland, New Zealand, despite Sydney being its primary hub. The airline operates flights between Auckland and Gold Coast Airport (OOL) as well as to Apia Faleolo International Airport (APW), both of which are not traditional Qantas hubs.
The route from OOL to AKL is a new service that began on June 16, 2026, and operates three times weekly using a Boeing 737-800. This route allows Qantas to compete directly with Air New Zealand on this route.
Qantas also commenced flights between Sydney and APW via AKL on the same day, using a 737-800. The Auckland-to-Apia leg is flown three times per week, while the segment between Sydney and Auckland operates daily. This fifth freedom route allows Qantas to improve its financial performance by flying passengers from New Zealand to Samoa.
The airline's decision to use Auckland as a hub for these routes is likely due to operating cost considerations. A nonstop flight between Sydney and APW would be relatively expensive, but by using AKL as a stopover, Qantas can reduce costs while still providing customers with connecting feed from other flights in Auckland.
