QC Ware Runs First Commercial Chemistry Workflow on IBM Heron Quantum Processor
QC Ware's commercial chemistry platform, Promethium, has successfully executed its first quantum-classical computational chemistry workflow on IBM's 156-qubit Heron superconducting quantum processor.
The demonstration, which targeted nitric oxide reductase, a metalloenzyme involved in bacterial nitrogen metabolism, measured its electrostatic interaction energy, a foundational quantity in drug discovery, catalysis, and materials science.
QC Ware's CEO emphasized that this is a demonstration of the platform's ability to interface with quantum hardware, not a shipping capability. The hybrid workflow divided the labor precisely: Promethium's GPU-accelerated quantum chemistry engine handled the bulk of the molecular modeling, while IBM's Heron processor contributed quantum measurements targeting the strongly correlated active site of the enzyme.
IBM's Heron r2 processor is currently their performance flagship for superconducting quantum computing. Its 156 qubits are arranged in a heavy-hexagonal lattice, designed to reduce unwanted coupling between neighboring qubits that plagued earlier architectures.
The successful demonstration marks an important step towards the integration of commercial chemistry platforms with quantum hardware, potentially leading to breakthroughs in fields like drug discovery and materials science.
