Quantum Computing Industry Heats Up as Billions Pour In
The quantum computing industry is heating up as technology companies, governments, and investors pour billions into research and development. The US Department of Commerce will allocate $2 billion from the CHIPS Act among nine quantum companies, with IBM receiving half of that amount to create a subsidiary in Albany.
IBM plans to invest over $10 billion in R&D, manufacturing, M&A, and its ecosystem over five years. GlobalFoundries will receive $375 million, while the remaining funds will go to seven developers specializing in various types of qubits.
Governments around the world are also investing heavily in quantum technologies, with China allocating $17.5 billion to three regional investment funds, the UK adding £2 billion to its National Quantum Strategy, and Japan declaring 2025 as the 'first year of quantum industrialization.'
Cloud services have become a key commercial model for the industry, providing access to third-party hardware without requiring customers to buy cryostats. However, most revenues are still tied to research and preparation for future applications.
