Quantum Sensing Tech Flies High with 89% Accuracy Boost
The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and Honeywell Aerospace have successfully flight-tested quantum sensing technology for aircraft navigation, known as MagNav. This system uses quantum sensors to read the Earth's natural magnetic field, creating an invisible map that allows pilots to navigate safely without relying on GPS.
The test involved a round-trip journey over the Pacific Ocean between Seattle and southern Alaska, with the MagNav system improving position accuracy by 89% compared to traditional backup navigation methods. The technology streamed navigation data directly to the pilots in real-time via standard tablets.
Honeywell Aerospace has been advancing magnetic navigation for several years and sees this test as a significant win for the department's quantum sensing priorities. Later this year, the DIU and Honeywell plan to flight-test the system on a U.S. military C-17 Globemaster III cargo plane.
