Qwen Breaks 3 Billion Downloads Barrier
Alibaba's open-source AI model family, Qwen, has reached an impressive milestone of 3 billion global downloads in just six months. This achievement surpasses Meta and Google's open AI models, cementing Qwen's position as the world's most-downloaded AI model family.
The scale of the gap between Qwen and its competitors is significant, with Google logging 418 million downloads and Meta recording 227 million in 2026, according to Hugging Face. This suggests that Alibaba's open-sourcing strategy has paid off, making Qwen a go-to choice for developers.
Hugging Face praised Qwen as 'one of the largest foundations of the open AI ecosystem,' highlighting its impact on the developer community. With over 300,000 derivatives built using Qwen models and more than 460 open-sourced models, the model family has created a self-reinforcing ecosystem.
Alibaba's distribution of Qwen through its cloud platform to enterprise customers in Southeast Asia and Africa has further strengthened this cycle. The company's efforts have not gone unnoticed, with US giants Meta and Nvidia releasing new open models in recent weeks, likely in response to China's growing influence in the AI space.
