RAM Crisis Hits Tech Giants: Microsoft Backpedals on Recommendations, Apple Scrambles for Memory Chips
Microsoft has deleted articles that previously advised users to aim for 32GB of RAM as an ideal or 'no-worries' loadout. The move comes amid a global RAM crisis, which is causing panic about upcoming iPhones and MacBooks.
Apple is also struggling to secure enough memory chips, with rumors suggesting it's turning to Chinese chip makers in desperation. However, even this plan appears to be faltering, as Apple reportedly can't get better deals on mobile DRAM from Chinese giant CXMT.
The RAM crisis has been exacerbated by the rising costs of system memory, which have made 32GB kits unaffordable for many consumers. Microsoft's reversal on its previous recommendations suggests that even the company is feeling the heat.
Analyst Tim Culpan notes that 'Apple and its suppliers are scrambling to get enough memory chips' for upcoming iPhone models. The situation is particularly urgent, given the approaching launch window of just a month or so away.
