South African President Cyril Ramaphosa recently launched the country's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system at OR Tambo International Airport. This new system is designed to make travel to South Africa easier, faster, and more predictable.

The ETA system will allow eligible travellers to apply online from anywhere in the world without needing to visit a South African mission or visa processing centre. Applications will be processed more quickly, and decisions will be more predictable. The experience of travelling to South Africa will be significantly improved.

Ramaphosa stated that the Electronic Travel Authorisation system reflects a simple but important truth: accessibility matters in the global economy. He emphasized that investors compare countries, tourists compare countries, conference organisers compare countries, and students compare countries.

The President also highlighted the importance of visa reform as an economic reform, jobs reform, and an immigration reform. He mentioned that the latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey by Statistics South Africa shows that unemployment remains a significant challenge for the nation. However, he believes that the ETA system will create more opportunities for South Africans to earn an income and build a better future.

The Electronic Travel Authorisation system is part of the broader programme of structural reform under Operation Vulindlela. This initiative aims to make South Africa a more competitive economy by removing barriers to growth, investment, and job creation.
