Rare IBM PC Prototype Revived with TLC and Upgrades
A rare IBM PC prototype from the late 1980s has been restored to working condition by Epictronics. The machine, known as the IBM 7496 Executive Workstation, features a unique case design with a monitor attached on a swivel mount.
The IBM 7496 was not functioning properly, requiring repairs and upgrades to get it up and running again. A 720K double-density floppy drive was removed due to its faulty condition, and an XT-IDE card was added to allow the machine to interface with a hard drive.
An AdLib clone soundcard was also installed to enhance the machine's capabilities. The IBM 7496 has a short-lived MCGA graphics subsystem, which is typical of its era. Despite its limitations, it can still play games from the time.
