RDS Failures Plague Windows Server Admins After September Updates
Windows Server administrators are facing issues with Remote Desktop Services (RDS) after installing the September Windows Server updates. The problems, which affect Windows Server 2019, 2022, and 2025 systems, cause RDS servers to fail, preventing users from connecting, and sometimes requiring a hard reset to restore functionality.
According to reports on Reddit, the issues occur after installing the cumulative updates from this month's Patch Tuesday. Admins say that RDS servers work normally for a few hours before connections start failing, existing Remote Desktop sessions are unable to disconnect or log off properly, and new connection attempts hang during the process.
Debugging has revealed what appears to be a deadlock between Remote Desktop and the Local Session Manager, but Microsoft has not confirmed this as the cause of the failures. Rolling back the September updates resolves the issues, but removing them also removes the security fixes included in the Patch Tuesday release.
