Recaro's R4 Seat Raises the Bar on Boeing 787 Comfort
Recaro's R4 Premium Seat Sets New Standard for Boeing 787 Comfort
The German seat manufacturer Recaro has unveiled its next-generation R4 premium seat for the Boeing 787, designed to offer a more comfortable and private experience for passengers. The new seat is positioned as a mid-cabin product on long-haul routes where airlines seek to differentiate themselves from traditional economy and business class.
The R4 features a sculpted shell structure, generous recline, and a multi-position leg and footrest arrangement aimed at supporting various sleeping and lounging positions. The seat also incorporates contoured privacy elements around the head and shoulder area, reducing line-of-sight contact across the cabin. While it doesn't enclose passengers behind a full-height door, the design delivers a greater sense of personal territory.
According to reports from the aircraft interiors sector, the R4 is part of Recaro's broader strategy to evolve its premium range while preserving weight reduction and maintainability. The seat's digital backbone supports modular electronics bays and standardized wiring runs that simplify maintenance and future upgrades. This design philosophy enables airlines to adopt new USB standards, update wireless charging hardware, or refresh screen generations over time without replacing the entire seat monument.
Early airline customers of the R4 include All Nippon Airways and China Airlines, which have announced plans to introduce the new premium economy seats on their latest 787-9 aircraft. The entry of the R4 into service is seen as a marker of how quickly expectations in premium economy are shifting towards products that borrow heavily from business class.
