Renowned Chemist Thomas Flautt Jr. Passes Away at 94 After Prolific Career
Thomas Joseph Flautt Jr., a renowned chemist and scientist, passed away peacefully on August 4th, 2026, at the age of 94. Born in Glendora, Mississippi, to Alline and Thomas Flautt, he was the oldest of five children.
Flautt's fascination with science fiction novels and technological advancements, particularly the Manhattan Project, began at a young age. He pursued his dream of becoming a chemist and graduated summa cum laude from St. Louis University in 1953.
After earning his PhD in atomic spectroscopy from UC Berkeley in 1957, Flautt was recruited by Procter & Gamble, where he developed several products, including Bizz, White Cloud, and Citrus Hill, and held patents on various inventions.
In addition to his work as a research scientist, Flautt had a strong interest in the psychological aspects of personality. He consulted on Meyers-Briggs, studied Carl Jung, and served as president of the International Enneagram Association.
