Restaurant Roots: How Denny's and Waffle House Launched AI Giants
Nvidia and Reddit, two companies that have made significant contributions to the world of artificial intelligence, share an interesting common thread. Both were founded in restaurants.
Ronald D'Orazio reports for Benzinga that Nvidia was launched during a breakfast meeting at a California Denny's location. Co-founders Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem came up with the idea of creating a chip to make 3D graphics realistic on personal computers.
The famous Denny's location has paid tribute to its connection to Nvidia's launch with a plaque unveiled in September 2023. The plaque reads 'the booth that launched a $1 trillion company.'
On the other hand, Reddit was founded by Alexis Ohanian and his University of Virginia roommates Steve Huffman and Aaron Swartz after Ohanian had an epiphany at a Waffle House location.
Ohanian put a career path in law on hold after having the idea to build community and share opinions online. The 'site of Alexis Ohanian's Waffle House Epiphany' is marked by a plaque at booth 19, installed in 2023.
