Restorative Dark Color Trend Takes Root
The start of fall brings a desire for cozier spaces and moodier colors. The 'Restorative Dark' trend, coined by Sherwin-Williams in its 2026 Color Forecast, combines deep, dark colors to create relaxing environments that help escape the outside world's demands.
According to Emily Kantz, Color Marketing Manager at Sherwin-Williams, people often think of spas as having light blue and sage colors. However, she notes that darker colors are actually more comforting, especially for those who need a dark space due to health issues like migraines.
The key to implementing Restorative Dark colors is applying them in spaces with natural light and using layered lighting with dimmers. This allows you to adjust the room's brightness throughout the day. Kantz recommends testing these colors in small areas, such as powder rooms or hallways, before committing to a full-room makeover.
The trend focuses on combining dark values that reflect less light, creating a sense of tranquility by being gentle on the eyes. As certain colors gain popularity, they evolve into undertones in other colors. For example, brown is getting a reddish undertone, and Sherwin-Williams predicts 'Bitter Chocolate' will be a popular color in 2027.
