Retail Giants Coca-Cola and Walmart Appoint New CEOs Amid AI Revolution
Coca-Cola and Walmart are embracing new AI-savvy CEOs as they prepare for a significant shift in the retail industry. James Quincey, outgoing CEO of Coca-Cola, stepped down at the end of March due to organizational and market changes, making way for COO Henrique Braun to take over. In an interview with CNBC, Quincey noted that his decision was influenced by the 'huge new shift' brought about by artificial intelligence.
Former Walmart CEO Doug McMillon also expressed similar sentiments, stating that he couldn't finish implementing AI-driven transformations during his tenure. McMillon handed over the reins to John Furner, who was previously head of Walmart U.S., in December 2025. Notably, Walmart moved its shares from the New York Stock Exchange to the Nasdaq at the same time, a move symbolizing the company's progress in technology.
Coca-Cola and Walmart have been deploying AI across various areas, including marketing, product development, and customer engagement. Coca-Cola uses generative AI for campaigns, data models to design new flavors and packaging, and partnerships like Microsoft Azure OpenAI to optimize supply chains and improve crop resilience. Similarly, Walmart has rolled out AI shopping assistants like 'Sparky' and the 'Wally' bot for merchants, as well as deploying AI across personalized recommendations, demand forecasting, inventory management, and frontline tools.
