Retailers' Parking Lot Cameras Collect Personal Data on Every Car

Shoppers at major retailers like Home Depot and Walmart may be unaware that their every move is being watched by advanced anti-theft cameras. These cameras, installed in parking lots, use automated license plate reader (ALPR) technology to capture detailed information about cars, including the license plate number, make, model, and color. According to auto expert Jay Beeber, this data is stored in a giant database somewhere.

Beeber, who serves as Chief Government Affairs and Policy Officer for the National Motorists Association, explains that these cameras are different from standard security cameras found inside stores. While in-store CCTV cameras only record footage of potential shoplifting incidents, ALPR cameras collect personal data on every car that passes through the parking lot.

Beeber notes that shoppers have a right to be concerned about this level of surveillance and suggests that they contact corporate offices to express their worries. He emphasizes the importance of transparency in how this data is being used and stored, and recommends that stores implement policies to limit the retention period of personal information.
