Retailers Turn Fraud Prevention Upside Down
Amazon and Walmart are shifting their approach to fraud prevention by making it part of the customer experience.
Amazon's new Alexa verification feature helps shoppers authenticate suspicious emails, texts, and calls before interacting with them. The feature compares message details with Amazon's records of billions of communications and provides one of three responses: the communication came from Amazon, it did not match Amazon's records, or the system could not verify it.
The move opens another front in Amazon's competition with Walmart, which is connecting fraud signals across transactions, returns, and customer contacts. The bigger retail shift is from fraud prevention to trust infrastructure, as commerce spreads across more channels and interfaces.
