Retired Supervisor Thomas Martin Soderberg Dies at 69 After Years of Community Service
Thomas Martin Soderberg, known to friends as 'Sody,' passed away at home on September 9, 2026, at the age of 69. Born in Virginia, Minnesota, Tom grew up in Cook and graduated from both Cook High School and Mesabi Community College.
A retired supervisor at U.S. Steel-Minntac, where he was a millwright and member of the United Steelworkers, Tom also worked at Honeywell in the Twin Cities and US Steel in Pittsburgh. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and was an avid golfer, fisherman, hunter, boater, and even burned brush at his cabin.
Athletics were a lifelong passion for Tom, who played various sports including bowling, basketball, football, hockey, baseball, and softball in his younger years. He started golfing at age 10 and would often spend all day on the course. Tom was also an enthusiastic member of Trinity Lutheran Church and regularly volunteered at the Cook Care Center.
Tom is survived by his sister, Bailey Jane Soderberg Conger (William), nieces and nephew, Mary Conger (Adam Bliss) and Liam Conger (Charanna), and several grand-nieces and nephews. He will be remembered for his appreciation for the people around him and the small ways in which he made a difference in their lives.
