Rising Gas Prices Fuel US Consumer Caution
US consumers are becoming more cautious about their spending habits as gasoline prices continue to rise. According to recent earnings reports from major retailers, households are directing most of their spending towards essentials and putting off big projects, while still making room for affordable treats and occasional splurges.
Walmart, TJX, and Home Depot all reported slower sales growth in the past month, with Walmart's CFO stating that price cuts alone may no longer be enough to compel a reticent shopper. In contrast, luxury brands such as Ralph Lauren and Estee Lauder reported strong results on demand for high-end products priced above $100.
Target is expanding its private label food brand Good & Gather while stocking premium items like Bugaboo baby strollers, and both Walmart and Target have raised prices on pantry staples due to tariff refunds. However, discounts have their limits, with some analysts warning that lower-income consumers may not have enough disposable income left to spend at all.
The trend is expected to carry into the key holiday shopping season, with retailers relying on a mix of discounts, new merchandise, and higher-end brands to keep customers coming. Home Depot and Lowe's benefited from demand for maintenance and seasonal projects, but consumers are continuing to postpone larger renovations that typically require financing.
