Rivals in Disguise: Steve Jobs and Bill Gates' Enduring Tech Feud
Microsoft and Apple have been fierce competitors in operating systems, consumer hardware, and enterprise software for decades. In a 1995 interview for PBS's 'Triumph of the Nerds' documentary series, Steve Jobs likened Microsoft to fast-food giant McDonald's.
Jobs criticized Microsoft for lacking originality and prioritizing business over user experience, calling its products 'very pedestrian' and saying it had no 'spirit.' He stated that Bill Gates' company wrote applications that were 'terrible,' but praised Microsoft for not giving up and eventually dominating the Macintosh application market.
Gates responded to Jobs' criticism by saying that he envied Steve's design and marketing abilities, calling him 'in a league of his own.' However, Gates downplayed Apple's iPad when it was first launched in 2010, stating that it was 'a nice reader' but not particularly innovative.
Jobs passed away in 2011, but the story serves as a reminder of the long-standing rivalry between these two tech giants. Microsoft eventually responded to the iPad's success by launching its own Surface lineup in 2012, which has since become a strong competitor in the tablet market.
