Rotary Foundation Receives Flood Assistance Applications Amid Ongoing Recovery Efforts

The Rotary Club of Buckhannon-Upshur Foundation has received 62 applications for flood assistance, following the July 20-21 floods that hit the area.

Buckhannon City Recorder Randy Sanders reported at a recent Rotary meeting that while Main Street appears to be back to normal, there is still significant devastation in the area. He cited 26 properties that still need debris picked up and acknowledged that some homes must be completely demolished due to asbestos concerns.

The recovery efforts are expected to take another two years, with a focus on pacing themselves and seeking national support from organizations like Lowe's, Home Depot, and 84 Lumber. The Rotary Club has raised over $160,000 so far, but will prioritize FEMA funds for applicants before allocating their own resources.

The Tygart Valley United Way has also disbursed $87,000 to families affected by the floods, with room for 13 more applications to reach a total of $100,000. The Rotary Club is still accepting new applications online and encourages those in need to apply for assistance.
