Ryan Family Awarded $29m in Damages Following Ethiopian Airlines Crash

Mick Ryan, an Irish humanitarian who worked for the United Nations, was among the 157 people killed in the Ethiopian Airlines crash in March 2019. His family has now received a significant payout from Boeing after a long-running legal battle.

Ryan, originally from Lahinch, Co Clare, had spent years helping vulnerable communities around the world before his untimely death at the age of 39. He was living in Cork with his wife and two children when he tragically passed away.

A US jury has awarded $29 million (€25 million) to Ryan's widow, Naoise, in a civil action against Boeing. This is part of ongoing efforts by families affected by the crash to seek accountability from the aircraft manufacturer.

The Ethiopian Airlines flight was heading for Nairobi when it crashed near Bishoftu, approximately 50km southeast of Addis Ababa. The pilot had reported difficulties and been authorised to return towards the airport before the plane went down.
