Ryan Family Wins $25 Million Damages Against Boeing
Micheál Ryan's family has finally achieved some sense of justice after seven years of fighting for accountability from Boeing. The deputy chief engineer at the UN's World Food Programme was killed in the Ethiopian Airlines crash along with 156 others on March 10, 2019.
The plane, a Boeing 737 Max, had similarities to another accident just months earlier, also in a Boeing 737 Max aircraft. The Lion Air plane in Indonesia crashed in October 2018, killing 189 people.
US federal prosecutors charged Boeing with misleading regulators about the Max's flight-control system, but later dismissed the case after reaching an agreement with the company to invest $1bn in fines, family compensation and safety improvements.
Naoise Connolly Ryan, Mick's widow, said she felt vindicated by the recent jury award of €25m in damages. 'I don't want this story to be about an amount of money,' she said. 'It is on the record at last that Boeing has said they are 100% responsible for the crash.'
