Ryder Cup Qualifying Shifts Focus from Money to Points

The Ryder Cup team selection process for Americans has undergone its third change in three years. Starting from this season, points will only be earned during the year leading up to the 2027 matches in Ireland. The top six players in points automatically qualify for the team, and Jim Furyk will make six captain's picks after the season-ending Tour Championship.

The new system drops the emphasis on PGA Tour official money, which has increased sharply over the past five years. Instead, a points distribution list awards 3,000 points to major winners, 2,850 points to The Players Championship winner, and 1,500 points for regular PGA Tour events.

The start of the qualifying period is earlier than before, beginning at The American Express in California and ending with the BMW Championship at Liberty National in New Jersey. Players cannot earn points from opposite-field events, a change aimed at reducing disparities between signature events and regular tournaments.
