S&P 500 Reaches Dot-Com Bubble Levels as AI Boom Rages On
The S&P 500 has reached a CAPE ratio of 41.1 in August, its highest level since September 2000, when the dot-com bubble peaked.
Like the dot-com era, the current AI boom is characterized by strong demand and rapid earnings growth, but with one key difference: AI adoption is happening much faster than internet adoption did back then.
JPMorgan Chase strategist Justin Biemann notes that AI is 'one of the fastest-adopted technologies in history', with nearly a quarter of American firms deploying it at scale. Consumer adoption of generative AI has also reached 50% within three years, compared to twice as long for the internet.
However, there are warning signs: just like during the dot-com bubble, stock prices are not keeping pace with earnings growth in many AI-related companies. Nvidia's stock price has increased 24x since 2023, while its earnings have grown 45x. Other companies, such as Micron Technology and Amazon, also show this trend.
