Sacred Groves Outperform Home Gardens in Predator-Prey Interactions
A study in Kerala's Kasaragod district found that sacred groves significantly outperformed nearby multi-storied home gardens when it comes to predator-prey interactions.
Researchers deployed artificial caterpillars and mealworms, finding predation rates were consistently higher in the 117 scattered sacred groves than in the surrounding human-dominated landscapes. Arthropods, particularly ants, accounted for about half of all attacks, followed by birds at around 22-35%.
The study's findings challenge classic fragmentation theory, which suggests that increasing isolation from a biodiversity source would reduce predator activity across both habitats. In contrast, predation in home gardens actually increased with distance from the Western Ghats.
Habitat complexity and quality were found to be driving factors in predator activity, rather than patch size alone. The study's authors emphasize the importance of conserving small forest patches like sacred groves, which can maintain ecological functions even when isolated within human-dominated landscapes.
